Mathäser

Mathäser is the most modern cinema in Munich right now. It has been reopened after renovations in 2003 and is now a city of film itself: Blockbusters are shown on 14 screens, there are cafés, bars and a lounge. One or two films are shown in English every week. Sneak preview night is Wednesday night. Tickets can be booked online and are rather pricey. Fully accessible for wheelchairs. Rather pricey.

Numerous Christmas markets take place in Munich between the 1st advent and Christmas eve, and the most famous one is the Christmas market at the Marienplat.

The most famous Christmas market is the Christkindl market. This is traditional Christmas at its very best and you’ll find all manner of stalls selling crafts, sweets, cakes, food, mulled wine and other delights. All christmas markets but one end on the 24th December, the one that stays open till after New Year is at Munich airport. This is about 35 mins drive or a 50 min public transport ride away from the centre but worth seeing if you arrive in town after the 24th.

For three weeks, from late June unto July, the Olympia-Park terrain becomes a township of tents and stages.

Culinary delicacies from all over the world are on offer, and international music and cabaret artists perform. Numerous tents devoted to musical performances, circus shows, music hall and stage plays delight audiences. More than 70% of the acts appearing are free.

There are also many stalls selling craft items, jewelry and things from all over the world. Definitely worth a visit.

During the Christmas period, another Tollwood festival takes place, this time on the Theresienwiese, where the Oktoberfest happens.

Since Munich is quite far qway from the sea, it has a continental climat, which means: hot summers and cold winters.

Jan to March

Really, really cold, like down to -10 and sometimes -15. It’s mostly dry, so a dump of snow lasts for weeks. If you come at this time, bring a hat, scarf and other warm stuff. It gets really cold!

April to June

April and May weather is variable, there can be showers, drizzly rain, cold weather, warm and it’s generally a bit all over the place. Towards the end of May though, it starts to get nice and you’ll see the street cafe culture starting up.

July to September

Very hot with thunderstorms. The summers in Munich are really hot and much to the annoyance of the beer garden owners frequently there are thunderstorms in the evenings. They usually pass quickly though and don’t dampen spirits.

October to December

Towards the end of the year not surprisingly it gets colder and rainier. If we’re lucky it snows in time for the Christmas markets though the last two years have been annoyingly mild. There is nothing like standing with a mulled wine on crunchy snow looking at the snow flakes falling. Fingers crossed.

So when to come?

My advice to friends it to either come in the winter when it’s nice and cold with snow, so you can go skiing in the nearby Alps, or come in the summer and enjoy the beer-gardens. Spring and Autumn can be a bit depressing.
