Driving - Safety tips

home > getting around > car hire > driving safety tips

The obvious things to say about driving in Germany is that you drive on the right side and all distance and speed measurements are in km.

The roadsystem in and around Munich is very good and the autobahns straight and fast. Some of them don't have speed limits and most are limited to 120 kph (75mph). On the autobahns, if you have a slow car you'll spend a lot of time looking in your rear view mirror to see fast cars coming up behind you. They chase each other as if racing, so be careful.

The speed limit in most built up areas is generally 60kph (37mph), and drops down in some to 20kph (12mph).

Driving around in towns presents some important new rules:

1. Unless you see a yellow diamond road sign, you do NOT have right of way over cars pulling out in front of you from side roads on your right.

2. When cycle paths run parallel to roads and you want to turn right or left, cyclists have right of way over YOU. Be careful because cyclists are used to being waited for and they don't slow down when crossing roads.

3. It is illegal to make rude hand gestures to other drivers in Germany, the police mean business over here so don't risk it. Amusingly, different gestures will earn you different fines.

4. Speed traps are often hidden in bushes so you won't know you've gone through one till you see a flash. If your German is up to it, listen to local radio stations (e.g. Bayern3) where (in great community spirit), the presenters warn motorists every day where they are.

Additionally don't park in no parking zones, you won't just come back to a ticket on your windshield, you'll come back to 'no car'. The authorities remove illegally parked cars prompty and you'll have a head-ache trying trying to find it again (it's happened to me). And it'll cost you dear.
